The Ohio Medical Cannabis Amendment has been submitted to Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine to request his determination that its summary is a fair and truthful statement of its full text. This submission represents the first step in a process that will place this proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution on the statewide ballot in the fall of 2012. Representatives of the OMCA PAC delivered petitions containing almost 3,000 signatures of purported Ohio voters to the OAG’s office in Columbus today.

“Being someone suffering from a rare chronic joint disease, I can say many patients view this as only the first essential step” said Secretary Jessica Knight of the University of Cincinnati’s chapter of Students for Sensible Drug Policy, whose organization participated in the signature gathering process. “In November, Ohio constituents must come together and not think about their political association, yet about the patients who, with the help of Ohio voters, can finally have access to a safe and effective natural medicine that is less toxic than many of the drugs that physicians prescribe everyday. “

The language for the OMCA first cites the inalienable rights that commence the long standing Bill of Rights in the Ohio Constitution to which all Ohioans are entitled. The measure then sets forth eight rights to be accorded Ohio residents who will be eligible to use cannabis as medicine as a result of a diagnosed debilitating medical condition. The Amendment also establishes an Ohio Commission of Cannabis Control to not only support, uphold and defend these rights, but to also regulate medical cannabis in Ohio.

The Ohio Medical Cannabis Amendment of 2012 is sponsored by the OMCA PAC, a non- partisan organization of citizens from all walks of life and all types of professions who support the right of sick, dying and disabled patients to utilize medial cannabis to alleviate their suffering.
