Dear Valued Volunteers,
Our campaign for the Ohio Medical Cannabis Amendment is quickly gaining speed. Getting the amendment on the ballot and passing it this fall have always been and still remain our principal goals. The experts have told us that this is eminently doable - we're up for the task!

Clearly, our most frequently asked question is, when and where can petitions be signed? Please note that copies of the petition have been available at every event we've staged since approval in January. While not definitive, we estimate our signatures so far in the thousands, but far from the goal of 385,000+. Look for additional signing events in the near future.

Our plan has two prongs. First, we have been seeking major funding, understanding that initiatives rarely…

How The Drug War Affects Our Families

We have a drug problem. Its victims include the very young, the very old and everyone in between. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, the number of addicted babies has nearly tripled in the last decade. Overdose death rates for the elderly increased twofold from 1999 to 2006. In 2009, drug induced deaths exceeded deaths from motor vehicle accidents. The culprit: legal prescription pain killers.

In many people, it starts innocently: a fall, an accident or a surgery begets unbearable pain, treated with an opiate pain killer. As useful as these drugs are, they can also be deadly. Their tragedy ripples through a network of family and friends whose lives are also torn apart and forever altered. We can do better.

What if there was a medication that acted…
Continue Reading

My husband was diagnosed with Recurrent Testicular Cancer with Metastases to the liver in 1995. For the 4 1/2 years before his death he suffered from the symptoms of the disease itself, as well as the side effects of the palliative care chemotherapy and other "traditional" medicine available to him. These symptoms included, but were not limited to; loss of appetite, nausea, anxiety and chronic, debilitating pain. Finding little to no relief from traditional pharmaceutical treatment, his oncologist informed us that some of her patients found relief from cannabis. Unfortunately, the 4 1/2 years were filled with either needless suffering or being in a half comatose state due to the side effects of wearing duragesic skin patches, vicoprofen, oxycodone, and morphine because he as a law abiding…
Continue Reading

I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease about a year ago. I have had constant, stabbing, violent pain throughout my entire abdomen. Sometimes it is quick, but other times it will last all day. I know many people can be treated for Crohn's Disease and live a perfectly normal life. In my case and many others, none of the medicine they have used has worked. I have used prescriptions that cost more than $12000 without insurance, and none have worked for me. I live with constant pain the next step we are looking into is surgery. The only relief I get is from using cannabis. Within five minutes the pain has been relieved, my hunger comes back and I feel as though I can be productive again. Legalizing medical cannabis would make my struggle of treating this disease bearable.

The Ohio Medical Cannabis Amendment is making waves this week after receiving a stunning endorsement from the Weed Blog. The article, "Why Ohio's Medical Marijuana Model is the Best in the Nation", has received over 1,000 recommendations in less than 2 days of its posting. It contains a very detailed write-up of OMCA's language and its importance in defending against federal intervention. Big thanks from all of us at the OMCA to those at The Weed Blog for your wonderful support.

My name is David and I was always a very healthy, active and athletic young person, until I got diagnosed with Crohn's disease during my first year of college when I was 19. I went from having a 3.5 GPA, to having to withdraw from all my classes because of the onset of this terrible disease. The medicine the doctor gave me for it only made it worse and I was left in unbearable pain and agony. During that time I just started to smoke marijuana and noticed that whenever I was smoking, my stomach cramps would go away, my appetite would return, and my energy levels would return to normal. Anybody that knows anyone with Crohn's disease knows the kind of toll it takes on people's lives. How it zaps you of all your energy and leaves you a shell of your former self. Whenever I smoked marijuana,…
Continue Reading

My name is Dick and I'm 62 years old. I was diagnosed in 2008 with hepatitis C and stage 4 cirrhosis. My liver doc can't treat the hep C because my liver is too compromised. I've had the virus, undetected since 1973 . The last 35 years I've married, retired with 31 years at the same job, served in public office in my community, was a scout leader, and was also a church elder. My medical condition requires I put as little toxic chemicals in my liver as possible. The condition causes flu like symptoms , fatigue , nausea , wasting , some depression . It is much like the HIV virus. There's treatment but no cure other than transplantation. I use cannabis daily because it gives me an appetite, relieves nausea, helps my aching body, aids in mood improvement, and helps sleep issues. I can function…
Continue Reading

My name is Josh Dallas. I'm 19 years old, and I am tired of being treated like a criminal because I use marijuana. I am not a criminal. In fact, I would love nothing more than the ability to pass by local law enforcement officers and wish them a safe day and good luck catching the bad guys. Instead, I avoid them because in today's society I AM the bad guy. I am considered a criminal simply for my choice to use marijuana as an aid in coping with my struggles. I suffer from stress, pain, lack of focus, appetite, and some sleep disorders. There are many strains of cannabis for various different symptoms. I think, to accuse me of committing a crime for choosing to take advantage of the medicinal properties of a plant is just ignorant. It is my right to choose my medicine.

Richard Lee Endorses Ohio Medical Cannabis Amendment

Cannabis icon Richard Lee, in one of his first statements since the raid on Oaksterdam University, has endorsed the Ohio Medical Cannabis Amendment.

"Can you imagine seeing your life's work raided and seized?" Lee asked in a telephone interview. "Many patients like me can."

At age 27, while working as a lighting technician, Lee fell off a scaffold and broke his back. A paraplegic, he must now use a wheelchair. Standard prescription pills didn't ease the pain, but medical cannabis did.

On April 2, the DEA, IRS, and U.S. Marshals raided Richard Lee's famed cannabis trade school, Oaksterdam University, in Oakland, California. Since opening in 2007, Oaksterdam has provided cannabis industry training to about…
Continue Reading
